Clowns.....or what do you find scary

What scares you?

Working in a Haunted House for Halloween made me stop and think about what things are scary. And one of the things that a lot of people (and children) find disturbing are.... Ready for it?.... CLOWNS.

Now, I know what you are thinking. Aren't clowns funny and happy and all of that? Aren't they supposed to entertain you and make you laugh? Doesn't the whole world love a clown? Well, after working for a circus and meeting real life clowns, I gotta tell you that not everyone finds them cute and cuddly. Some of my friends, who are clowns, tell me that many children are actually very frightened by them. Even some adults find them upsetting. There is even a name for it--coulrophobia!

I have many friends who are clowns, and most of them are very nice and like to make people laugh. But, there are disturbing clowns out there also.... such as Stephen King's IT. And if you've ever seen Killer Klowns from Outer Space... well, that movie is just disturbing!!

So, Just a thought.... What do you find scary?

I'm one of those adults who find clowns to be 'scary'.  I'm also scared to death of lizards, quicksand, 'killer' puppets and the Republican Party Platform.  I'm sleeping with the light on tonight.
 Love your journal, BTW.

OMG....me too! Clowns are quite frightening... I think we laugh because they make us nervous. Most of there antics are quite vicious too. Think about it... they corner some poor defenseless guy and then spritz him with seltzer water. The only truly amazing clowns I have ever seen perform are the ones from Cirque du Soleil.
Nice journal by the way!

Gosh, I'm not sure what scares me. Clowns are OK I guess...I'm not afraid of anything traditional like snakes, spiders, etc etc.. I think if I had to choose something, it would be I am scared of the people who think up stuff for slasher and horror movies that decapitate, and chop up people. I think they may be a little disturbed in the head to have thought processes like that and consider it entertainment. Nice journal!

I don't know what it is about them ... they completely freak me out. I don't know what it is, but they're just really creapy. I'm not sure if it had something to do with "It" or "Polterguist" (that creepy clown doll). Ugh, I have the chills going up my back just thinking about them!!

Killer Klowns from Outer Space, that movie is just, well . . . it exists, which is quite unfortunate. Never thought of clowns as scary, though I suppose sitting here long enough and wondering what made a grown person paint their face beyond what Revlon offers can lead to some rather disturbing conclusions.

Love your journal!  And yes, I find clowns terrifying.  Their smiles are so exaggerated and you really don't know what's behind all that make-up!  Thanks for the post.  Have a great day and keep writing.  And please check out my journal when you have the time! :-) http://journals.aol.com/shedtheshellnow/ShedtheShell/

Hi, I was looking over all your journal enties and even though it's past halloween I would like to comment on your clown story. My husband and I use to own a place called Family Fun and Games. It was a pizza and video game place. I use to dress up as a clown for parties. You are so correct most kids are scared of clowns and I also found some older kids love to mistreat you as a clown. I am happy not to be a clown any longer. lol I'm not really scared of many things. I use to be scared of death but after my car accident and facing the death of my family members instantly I'm not scared of death for myself any longer. I know that I will one day be with them again. I think the only thing that comes to mind that brings fear to me is the thought of someone else I love dying and having to deal with the grief. It's so painful. Even though I think I can handle anything this is one thing that I never want to do again. Have a Bless day and thank you again for giving me something to think about. By the Way your homemade gifts look very nice. I also made things like that and it's a lot of work. One of my hobbies is this computer now and it really makes my time fly.  Judy Pearl
